Challenges & Solutions

One of the earliest and most complex challenges involved restructuring the site’s navigation architecture.

Due to the volume and complexity of the content, we implemented a highly customized mega menu system that included:

  • Keyboard accessibility
  • Focus-within behavior
  • Dynamic content regions
  • Responsive layouts
  • Accessibility-focused interactions

The header itself also introduced additional complexity, as the top navigation area functioned primarily as an informational region displaying contact details, hours, and location information for both library branches rather than traditional navigation.

One of the most unique features of the site was a dyslexic font toggle requested by the library team.

The functionality needed to:

  • Persist across all pages
  • Synchronize between desktop and mobile menus
  • Maintain layout consistency
  • Adjust responsive typography dynamically
  • Preserve accessibility standards throughout

Because the alternate font rendered dramatically differently from the default typeface, extensive responsive adjustments and typography refinements were required throughout development. The project relied heavily on highly customized button systems, decorative hover treatments, and dynamic component styling.

The homepage hero banner included a layered content box with a blurred background effect that required careful accessibility consideration to ensure text remained readable against varying imagery.

Additional ribbon-style content treatments positioned at the base of the banner introduced further responsive complexity throughout the homepage structure.

The site also relied heavily on custom event functionality and room reservation workflows.

To support the library’s operational needs, I helped customize the Events MU-plugin and related content systems while ensuring accessibility and usability remained consistent across all scheduling and reservation experiences.

Community-focused design.
Accessibility from the start.

Every navigation system, responsive layout, and interactive feature was developed with usability and inclusivity in mind — ensuring the platform remained approachable and accessible for all visitors.

The final experience provided both library locations with a flexible and highly customized digital platform designed to support events, resources, and community engagement for years to come.
